So many of you ask us, 'When did George's Galley open?' It opened the first week of February, 1978. A couple of days later it closed temporarily due to the Blizzard of '78! The owners then were Demi & George Lakatzis. Many of you may remember or at least have heard of "Pete's Lunch". That little diner was attached to the Heart & Home building and was owned by Demi's father.
In January of 1970, on a very cold night, the building that sat where George's now is, there was a horrific fire that took the whole block but spared Pete's Lunch. It is in that spot where the building burnt that George's was built.
George and Demi sold the business in 1994 to Walter Barlow who at that time had worked for George for 13 years. George remained the cook for many years and just recently has retired. Demi passed away in 2008.
Pictures of the fire and Pete's Lunch are hanging up at George's Galley.
